Yesterday was the so called "holiday" of "Juneteenth" and I believe there are really good reasons that Americans should not celebrate this "holiday".
First, I place both "Juneteenth" and "holiday" in air quotes for a few important reasons. One is that I don't hold that "Juneteenth" is a genuine day of celebration that should be federally recognized, which is the primary point that my post aims to establish. Also, I don't like the use of the term "holiday" to refer to secular celebrations, since the term is derived from the phrase Holy Day, and since secular "holidays" often have nothing to do with God or holiness I find the usage of this term to be subversive and an abuse of language. With those caveats out of the way, let me make my case for why Juneteenth should not be celebrated by Americans of good will.
The first reason is that "Juneteenth" is based on a lie that racial oppression, prejudice, and injustice are systemic and really and truly a part of modern American life that need to be addressed with a crusade-like fervor. The second and related reason is that "Juneteenth" is being used as a political bludgeon to guilt people into that view of racial oppression, prejudice, and injustice in America.
